In Fort. First week of work. Busy getting up to speed, there's a bunch of learning curve around many things, both mind and body. Househunting, but don't have anything to come home to right now, so my days are mostly focused on work. Hobbies will come when I have a space for them and have settled in. It's nice, in a way, to be able to focus so much. It would be nicer to have someone waiting at home to distract me.

Josh is keeping himself very busy on the coast fixing up a new boat; there's a six or seven week span where I'm seeing him only for a single day. Tucker is coming up one week a month, but this is not that week. No new dogs till I have a home for them. I am getting my rabbits in two weekends, which will be excellent. My current landlady is really great to talk to and live with, but not the same as someone waiting to snuggle me.

More about work and houses when I know.

How do you decide if a house is the right house?

Personal experience: a bit like a relationship, the rightness of a home is partly luck, but insofar as you can pick it, it should be evaluated through two dimensions.

  1. It has to avoid a bunch of "fatal nots" -- deal-breaking problems (i.e. not need roof/foundation/walls/plumbing anytime soon, not be in a flood zone, not cost too much, not be too small, not have termites, etc). This involves listening to facts and figures, tables and experts, and blocking out your immediate hopes. Some "fatal nots" will be particular to you, rather than universal, but they need to be evaluated dispassionately.

  2. It has to lift your spirits when you walk in, provide some intangible sense of delight, comfort, desire, happiness. This involves carefully listening to your heart and blocking out all the other factors.

Satisfy both and you're good to go :)
