A tremendous amount of human play is about the traditional narrative conflicts, when you think about it. Anything from monopoly to tag to softball is in that man vs man category, in some way, about half-saying "I can beat you, but I do so safely within the context of these rules". It's always a fine line. I think it's somehow easier for folks to have those formal pre-set rules; for me it's easier to follow the line of a person's internal logic than external rules.

Note this is coming from someone who absolutely cannot do formal competition in any form, because I cannot walk that fine line and instead I fall off in either direction. I can't play cards, I can't board game, I can't play team sports or competitive sports. So I'm kinda guessing.
