Well, the telework contract at work has the following language:

8. On-site visits
The employee agrees that joint on-site safety and suitability visits by the employer and OSH committee representatives may be performed prior to the commencement of telework and then on a regular basis, with advance notice. These visits will be to ensure that the home office meets basic safety standards and the designated home office is suitable for the tasks to be performed by the employee.

Other on-site visits may also be made for the purpose of retrieving equipment and other Employer property in the event of the employee’s illness, termination, or any other extraordinary circumstances.

ugh. are you looking for another job? this seems extremely invasive and, tbh, inappropriate of them. your home is YOURS, not theirs to legislate around.

I've sent a note to the union, and to diversity and inclusion ("circle back to me if you can't find an alternative"). I brought it up with a couple folks at work who felt it was overstep, but none of them are my supervisor, the head boss, or work for either of them. I'm going to let it hang there awhile and see what happens.

Meantime I've been keeping an eye out low-key for something else for awhile, but this is a small town, my work tends to be somewhat physical and thus in-person, and my industry has recently contracted significantly. Shifting careers is a bit challenging; I could potentially grab a GIS cert and do remote work but that may be a last resort.

i hope good things can come from the union and the general sense at work that this is an overstep - it certainly feels like one to me. i further hope that a better job opportunity materializes for you in a timely manner.
