Altered States

So I've done it again. I read Humans, the sequel to Robert Sawyer's Hominids, in less than 24 hours and started on the last in the trilogy, plus I got a bunch of Steinbeck in. Reading a book from start to finish, beginning-middle-end, rising action-climax-neat tidy ending, in that little time is very bad for me. I get jittery and bored and distractable and I have the feeling that I want to get close to people and express lots of stuff, but I have nothing to express, because the emotional ride wasn't due to actual stuff happening.

The book itself is ok, not great, not bad. It's better than much sci-fi, but the characters are getting unlikeable, and the author is becoming obsessed with gender distinctions and religion. That makes it sound like a terrible book, but it's not really that bad. Wait till you see what I have to say about Spider Robinson or Heinlein.

Maybe I should switch back to Steinbeck for a bit.

I may not be able to finish Canticle for Leibowitz. Especially in this state, it's a bit too intense for me. I'll slip it in sometime when I haven't read for a bit, I think. Sorry, Squaddie and Wik, it'll get to you eventually.

I'm trying to plan my month of July, which is sorta difficult. Juggler has his vacation time in July, which means... soon. Like, very soon. I'm looking for stuff to do with him, I'd love to take a multi-day trip somewhere, but the trick seems to be getting him interested in the stuff I wanna do. *sigh* Oh, well. I may end up Greyhounding up the Fraser Canyon at some point by myself, that would be pretty entertaining. That would be in August, though, when my free time, um, exists.

Also, Folk Fest coming up. I need to communicate with Ellen (hi, Ellen!) about whether she and Adrian are going, and if they're not, maybe prevail upon Kynnin to drive my tent out there(?).

I should call Kyle to see if he'll be at the folk fest.

I've used the word 'should' a lot in there. Interesting. I feel comfy and not-rushed, no doubt due to a very full belly and this lovely warm-grey-sleepy weather. I think it's time to crawl under the sheets and read s'more.

Canticle is probably one of my favorite books. That and "City" by Clifford Simak.

Oh, really? That's so cool. Most people I know are sort of baffled by it, or find it boring. Ditto Grapes of Wrath, which is prolly my most-favourite book.

I likely need to track down this 'City'. I don't think I've read much by Simak, somehow.

count me in, and probably Adrian - need to sort out times for Friday arrival - ie. do you want to get there early and pick a site, I'll arrive later with gear and Adrian......

call me

The earliest I could get out there is the first West Coast Express, it's earlier than you guys'll be there though, I guess. I'll call you tonight or tomorrow morning.

What's the earliest Express? I've requested the day off so that I can prep the equipment/food/car, but Adrian doesn't get paid if he doesn't work. We could get all your crap in the car, and then you could just go out yourself with nothing to carry/worry about, throw down a blanket and claim a site? Dunno if that's how it works. Oh, and we still don't have the passes - where do we get those locally again?

I see [livejournal.com profile] _greenwitch is piping up, but if you need a ride or need gear moved, you'll have to talk to [livejournal.com profile] darthmaus. I'm probably getting rid of the car after my stint at work is done to save on insurance and maintenance costs, so Mouse is doing the driving for the Fest in a C.A.N. truck.

Ahh, I was wondering when you were gonna do that. What are you selling it for/how are you disposing of it?

I think I'm going to put up posters at SFU and put a line in the student paper, as well as put a short classified in the Province or something. I'm thinking $700, negotiable down to $500. They'll need to do a brake job and replace the starter on it before it's good to drive, so I can't see selling it for more than $1000 considering that and the mileage on it.

If I can just get $500, that'll pay for buying into the Cooperative Auto Network.

Failing selling it, I'll take it to the scrap yard just to be done with it. But, I'll give it a goodly amount of time to sell first.
