Juggler, I was right. Rattan is a palm.

"Rattans are spiny climbing palms in the tropical forests that can attain lengths of over 185 metres. There are 13 rattan genera with 700 known species."

So they're kind of palm trees that climb up other trees with sharp hooks. Cool. I wonder if they're growable indoors....
