Heavy

I got to do what I love to do today, for money, and I liked it. I got to strut around with a holstered set of pruning shears on my hip and play with plants.

It was great till I got home and read up on the stuff going on in New Orleans. I know this stuff is in people-- both the people rioting, raping, etc and the people keeping Canadian aid (food, people, etc) out of the US. I don't wanna see it, though.

Here's a secret I haven't really told anyone except Chris, who understands: I'm trying for that permaculture apprenticeship next summer for two reasons, one because I love it, and the second... really, truly, the second because I want to have the ability to keep myself and others alive if and when it all goes under.

So there, that's the secret of the day. Be well, y'all.

I'm trying to avoid reading about NO. There's nothing I can do, and reading about it upsets me to high heaven.

A friend of mine asked if I'd want to go down to do relief work. I'm sorta wondering if the slot's still open...

I've been following the news on Katrina's aftermath, and actually started tearing up yesteday, overwhelmed, thinking about how hard the situation is for people there right now, and for their friends and family who are out of touch. I realize how lucky we are that there's been no earthquake here on the West Coast (our major concern) - how everyone should be prepared for an emergency, and I too think about having my root cellar, and my garden, and my know-how so that I could make it through an extended emergency. I also realize, that I would never be comfortable living in a place like New Orleans, where the real possibility of flooding and tropical storms would cancel out that kind of preparation. I want to survive if and when it all goes under myself. My mother thinks I'm a 'survivalist,' while I think I'm just trying to be cautious. I think she's out of touch - driving a gas-guzzling BMW, with nothing in the cupboard in case of a snow storm or power outage.

I'm thinking less the natural disaster part itself, and more the people-going-crazy afterwards-- but yes.

Hi

The permaculture thing really is fascinating.

Also, wanting to keep people alive after the blast (or what-have-you) is an unusual an noble reason to want to do anything.

Wanting to keep people alive after the blast is what?

I dunno, how much more selfish can you get than not wanting all your friends to just up and die on you, and wanting to have a barterable skill?

I find permaculture absolutely fascinating, obviously.

Do you ever have free time?

[identity profile] arrogant-gamer.livejournal.com 2005-09-03 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi

Hmm... wanting is one thing, but actually having that be the reason behind some of your actions is another.

Free time! I am made of nothing else! All I do is study and play games, so yes.

We should hang out and not game sometime.

Hi

Good idea: why don't you come to KMM sometime?

Actually, what I meant was:

Good idea! Why don't you come to KKM sometime?

But the first one works too.

[identity profile] greenstorm.livejournal.com 2005-09-04 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
No, you meant:

Good idea! Why don't you come to KMM sometime!?!?!

But the answer remains: I tend to be tired on Mon nights and need to get up early the next day. I keep planning to, but life tends to not allow for it.

Hi

Ow my eyes!

Hmm... in that case something else must be arranged: perhaps tea and Blokus some evening? Or perhaps you know of some social event on a KMM scale?

Maybe Dim Sum or Laser Tag? On a Saturday?

z.

[identity profile] greenstorm.livejournal.com 2005-09-04 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Blokus looks suspiciously like a game.

Laser tag I've never done. Hm.

What I really wanna do is find a park with a cable slide. I understand they're taking those down as 'too unsafe' but after a lovely time on the tire swings with Devon the other day I find myself missing playground equipment badly.

D'you do Sha Lin noodles?

[identity profile] arrogant-gamer.livejournal.com 2005-09-04 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi

Hmm... Blokus is a game, but like Backgammon it is played non-competitively over a cup of joe (or cha) and a delightful conversation. It is game-like, though.

Laser tag is fun, and from your comment about swings, you sound like you would enjoy it.

Little forest? I like noodles.

As for parks with cables: only at night and only in drink.

Noncompetitive like, doing crosswords together noncompetitive?

Is laser tag like tire swings?

It's the noodle place on Cambie and Broadway, "made by hands"

Re cable slides: you suck.

[identity profile] arrogant-gamer.livejournal.com 2005-09-05 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi

Noncompetitive like, a poetry slam noncompetitive.

Running around in the dark acting like a six year old? Yes!

Ah! Yes, right across from Great Golden Wall; I know the place.

Re I suck: ouch.
