They will ask you to leave your friends
The green shoots that are your children
Springing up with hope and renewal every year
Familiar and reliable
With whose existence you are interwoven

They will ask you to leave your family
The only family that held you
The only creatures that sat with you when you cried
That accepted both your silence and your joy
And that come back, over and over, to be in your unvarnished presence

Surely hope can be replaced with unchanging green paint
Maybe even a mural on four straight walls, that's like a garden.
With no winter inside, who needs
The reminder of life's inevitable return?

Surely love can be replaced
With the safety of walls that will never
Die, nor leave, nor even allow you to forget them as they seep
Their faint nauseous scent into even your sleep.

Surely the entire world can be replaced
By a single street, maybe two, where you cannot even sit down
On the hard concrete to rest, and where people carelessly breathe poison
As they walk past you, going on with their
Safe, hopeful, loving lives.
