So today looks like spring out, the hazel flowers are open and the sarcs are just haemmorhaging scent into the air, it's sunny, it's tank top weather, and I was going past Donald's market at Nanaimo on my way home. It is always a good decision to go in there.

I suddenly like cooking again! I don't know what it is about our local place, Choices-- it's got lots of exciting local food with a fair bit of biodiversity, but nothing in there excites me. Could be the prices, but I think it's partly just the atmosphere. It's not a place where you go in and think, 'watercress! And purple potatoes! I could make soup!' but instead somewhere where you wander the lovely rows of fancy veggies trying to figure out what you could possibly eat.

I came home with bags full of veggies and I have some watercress/potato/carrot/lo bak soup on the stove that will be super yummy, some lo bak in my tummy, some veggies getting ready for roasting (celeriac, parsnips, brussels sprouts, a couple purple potatoes, maybe some red peppers and maybe not, some acorn squash), and a bunch of BBQ tofu ready for baking.

Angus and I are trying a low-meat/no red meat thing for awhile to see if it helps his illness. Depending on how it goes we will next try a no-soy/legumes thing or a no meat of any kind thing or somethin' along those lines. I had been dreading it, but suddenly it seems exciting and fun-- like it would have a year or two ago. I am regaining my hobbies one by one, enjoying things that I had forgotten how to enjoy, and it's very good. I need to not lose this.

With the risotto I made last night there is so much food in the house I don't know what to do.

Anyone have any recipes for me? I am looking for: wheat, dairy, egg & meat free things, may contain fish. I suck at cooking fish other than making nice crispy rainbow trout or poached whitefish, so help would be nice.

You might do a search for "gluten-free" cooking, to find applicable recipes. I have a friend with gluten allergies and I think a lot of those would fall within the range you're looking for.

What is celeriac? Miso soup is my favorite when my appetite is twitchy.

Take a bowl
add a big pinch of bonito flakes, and a teaspoon of miso paste
Cover with boiling water, whisk until it's mixed
Add dried seaweed, tofu cubes, and green onion

Sometimes I'll mix in enoki mushrooms, daikon, or soybeans and make a more stew like creature instead.

I have extra bags of bonito flakes if you would like to try it.

Celeriac is "root celery".

I have a bag of bonito, I should resume miso soupness. I took a break for a bit.

Oh, gluten free is something we've been dealing with for two and a half years or so. It's the vegan part that makes it a little different, and a bunch of my friends on here do some pretty cool foods. Does your friend have any particular favourites?
