Alright, so I went to the local David Hunter garden center, where they had 4 varieties of cherry on a graft. The trees were so much better and more solid looking, though they were about twenty bucks more. I always have the urge to rescue stuff from home-depot-type places, but if I want something healthy that will last that's certainly not the way to go for this. I also saw a robinia 'purple robe' there, which I want to look up, and some 'apple blossom' clematis armandii. Also jerusalem artichoke, but no horseradish as yet. There were some large trees there as well - standard as opposed to dwarf, so you're lookin at I think 35 feet or so. That might almost be tall enough for the corner, though unharvestable as cherries. Hrm.

The world needs more broadleafed evergreen shrubs and vines.

It's raining now on the big pile of mud in the backyard that is The Trench. It rained on me at the nursery, too. Nice to be out in, but I'm underdressed and it's cold. I'll be glad to get home and crawl into bed -- I've used up my warm bath allowance for the day, so that's what I'll do.

Take care.

Are the armandii all evergreen? I think it was the 'snowdrift' ones I was looking at the other day.

Yeah. The snowdrift and standard are white-flowered, while the apple-blossom is very, very subtly purple-pinkish white. :) Good to have both.

I'm a warm shower girl myself......

Went to GardenWorks on Lougheed last night, after dealing with the slimey service manager at my car dealership. Usually wandering through a nursery has the same effect on me as cuddling puppies, but last night I was disgusted by the state of both the indoor and outdoor plants, the lack of interest and knowledge shown by the employees, and the general aura of the place. Checked for grafted cherry stock, and despite the fact that two people were closed up in the little hut out in the yard, no one showed any interest in helping me with any questions I might have. I found no sign of *anything* grafted, and after checking at the (shiver) pesticide counter inside - only employee who knew anything - I discovered that they do not carry variegated horseradish. Sorry I couldn't help you in your quest.

Ooohh, a nursery-goer. We may need to make a date sometime. My loved ones don't mind the occasional outing, but...

I don't know if anyone actually sells it around here - I know it's in Richter's catalogue. Thanks for the thought. It's certainly fun to go looking. :)

So David Hunter garden centre on Arbutus and Broadway has 4-grafts, all sweet cherries, and apparently the Gardenworks in Burnaby has the same for a bit less (they're all a little bit pricey, but less than an expensive Japanese maple).

I've seen the ones at David Hunter, they're really healthy, solid, good-looking trees. Next stop, Burnaby...

I never actually talk to nursery employees -- or taxi drivers, or anyone, and no one mostly talks to me. :)
