princess_joy reminded me in a comment down there that this really is not all bad. I do have many ways to feel better about things, like the thing below.

1) Time. Things feel better with time, and then worse, and then better again in waves, but they tend to stabilise closer to better than worse.

2) People. Contact with a wide variety of interesting people blunts any sort of discomfort from any one.

3) My future. I can plan it, think about it, jiggle it in. Did you know I'm thinking about going back to school? It helps to remember that there is a tomorrow, and that I have some say in my tomorrow.

4) Gardening. Active, digging gardening burns off stress, while contemplative observing of my spaces lets it seep away without thought. Usually I hold onto things that hurt me, but in my garden I have no reason to.

5) Being useful and productive. It always helps me to help someone else, to produce something concrete, to knock something off a to-do list.

6) Taking myself out to dinner. There's something very nice about going to a restaurant with me, myself, and my book. It's like I have a right to exist as an individual entity, to take up space all by myself, to do nice things for myself.

7) Walking. Wandering through places created by man or nature, where I remember that we are all part of a process and no more nor less than a piece of the whole.

Have a good day, all.

I like that, too. Especially the contrast of both, walking from one into the other: sometimes the change is gradual and unnoticeable, at other times it is a clean cut.

Burning off stress

I agree with your comment about gardening - aside from taking *very* long walks, I've found gardening is the best way for me to totally release worries and stress, relax and enjoy the positive energy I get from working with the soil. (That's also why I wind up realizing I've overdone things like digging or bending over - when that 20 minutes becomes two hours....)
