This year's folk fest rocked. It also got me a much-needed break from 'stuff' happening and allowed me to get some things in perspective.

There was less dance-y music on the main stages at night than I remember from years past, but there were also a lot of really cool 'experimental' kinds of bands -- French Canadian rock/punk, this guy on a bass who does amazing stuff with a bow and something that makes sounds repeat, some 'avante gard' jazz, some plain really cool traditional guitar-and-guy folk singers, cuban fire-breathers, tons of african stuff, a vietmanese/chinese/japanese/jewish/uruguayan/irish/west african group that was *amazing*, a bunch of klezmer (old jewish/european), three guys who did 'the good, the bad, and the ugly' on guitar, 'Jeff Healey and the Jazz Wizards', and a Danish folk/rock band.

The festival is getting more commercial now, but it's also bigger. I wouldn't be surprised if attendance was double what it was two years ago. It means there are more sucky people, they have to tell the kids not to dance (:P), but it's not so bad.

I got to spend time with a bunch of people I knew in high school. Gaby recently broke up with a longstanding boyfriend, and now she's back to doing things she likes. She knows this is better for her, and it is -- it was nice to see her again, and also nice to have someone around with that kind of experience in recent past so I could talk about things a little bit. I stayed at a place Trevor was housesitting, so Trevor and I got to hang around and chat a bunch. Kyle came down off saltspring island for a day or two. It was nice to be around people I've known for a long time, and nice too to be around people who you could just glance over at and give a look when something was happening, and you'd understand each other.

Kyle and Gaby are very different from each other, and both again from me. It's very interesting listening to us all talk.

I got pretty things (jewelery and a hat, this year) and didn't spend too too much money. I danced a lot but my legs never got to the point where they hurt. I drank four to six litres of water and.or gatorade each day, and I am not yet suffering from heat stroke. I feel like myself again, and refreshed.

More later, perhaps. Until then, has anyone heard of Darren Schaffer? If not, do. Also Silk Road Music (local) and... well, I'll leave it at that. :)

Unfortunately it's a bunch of Flash and whatnot that you probably won't be able to see under Mozilla/Linux, but check it out sometime. Fortunately, we can order his CD.

So glad you had a great time :) I wanna hear all about it and was wondering if you were still on for tea, and what time you were gonna be home?
