Someone I know said, of the killer at Tumbler Ridge, that is unfortunate the killer killed themselves because it deprived the survivors of the ability to enact justice. Which, I guess she was implying that just someone dying isn't enough, which implies torture. Very Victorian. I honestly think I'm going to be sick. Pretty much like when my friend said it would be good for society of sexual abuse survivors could go around in groups and extrajudicially assault people (that friend was silent on whether killing should be allowed).

While we all interpret things differently, I didn't go to torture or death when I read that comment. Canada doesn't have the death penalty, and torture or mob justice would not happen. At worst, police shooting the suspect during stand-off of would have resulted in death.

Another interpretation of justice not being enacted is that during the trial, when they are not driven by impulse and pain, the killer did not have to face in the cold light of day that they had killed children and community members// and the pain in others they left behind from doing that. Impact letters and such communicating that discomfort/pain and life alterations/difficulties that choices have caused to the killer during court process is often the only 'revenge' or justice that surviving family have control over.
