Okay, I haven't read the article, but that newspaper in the weird gold boxes had a headline: Polygamy Coming Soon, Grits Fear... or something like that.

Now, I could insert a couple of standard rants (poly(amory) vs marriage in historical oppressioj of women, polygamy vs polyamory, etc) but I don't care. I'm just highly amused.

Fear me! I'm all corrupt and stuff. Governments quake before me.

All shall love you and despair (http://www.theargonath.cc/characters/galadriel/sounds/queen.wav)!

You know, and stuff.

That was the National Post. They are stupid and are a subscriber-only service in the Internet. Here is a different version of the story:

"Conservative Leader Stephen Harper warned Thursday that if same-sex legislation becomes law, the Liberals will not be able to prevent fundamentalist groups from requesting extreme types of marriages such as polygamy."

Extreme type of marriages...I thought that was when people had a bungee-jump ceremony.

Better not let Mr. Harper know that's been going on for a while.

And government is all about 'preventing' people from 'requesting' stuff... rather than, you know, letting everyone ask for what they want and sorting it out after that.

I wonder if they meant 'preventing' people from 'forcing us all to do it'? That would be scary.

It's not goverment, we're talking about it's a political group. And he's afraid because letting people ask for what they want (as opposed to telling them what they want) might mean that 1) people have to decide their own moral/legal compasses and 2) the canadian people might prove to not care that much if people (whether poly or fundamentalistwhatever) marry other people.

I'm both amused and annoyed that the article treats "polygamy" and one-man-many-women as synonymous. Bloody right wing doesn't even know what the "threat" really is...

well, thet are *partially* right. Polygamy is often one-man-many-women.

But real,y do you expect them to do in-depth investigations into what multiple-marriage might really mean, instead of yanking out the idea of oppressed multiple child brides?

I love the conventions of headline-speak.
you should now consider the image of corn meal quaking at the potential of another spouse coming home....

Not just cornmeal, but cornmeal with cheese!

Granted, you would get good quaking action going on.

most grits I've had have started out plain, or with a little butter.

sometimes with maple syrup.

mmm.

i think grits are naturally predisposed to quaking, being all moist.

That's more like cornmeal mush then. I always thought the distinction between the two wqs that grits were savory.

I had a sudden flash of grits-in-jello-salad. Think I'll run away now.

grits can be done sweet or savoury. Sometimes I put on syrup and butter and sometimes fried eggs.

The "Grits" and the "Tories" are the nicknames for the Liberals and the Conservatives. The terms were imported from Britain along with the parties themselves. It's much like calling the Republican Party the GOP in the States.
