Chefs to the Field
a Summer Lunch Fundraiser and Culinary Competition
Sunday, August 7, 2005
at Glen Valley Organic Farm
Preparations are underway for the 4th Annual Chefs to the Field Summer Lunch and Green Cuisine Competition. Culinary teams from Vancouver’s Aurora Bistro, ‘C’ Restaurant, Gramercy Grill, Raincity Grill, Tomato Fresh Food Cafe, Terminal City Club (2003 champion), and The Seasonal Experience from Langley will be sharpening their knives, digging deep for inspiration and lacing up their running shoes in an attempt to best 2004’s defending team from the Vancouver Club. The winners take home a coveted Green Cuisine chefs’ jacket donated by Blackwood Career Apparel, a bountiful basket of farm produce and a gift from Barbara Jo’s Books to Cooks. Following tradition, last years’ champs are hosting this year's event under the enthusiastic leadership of Chef David Beston.
Veteran shareholder and farm fan Jo Willson invites you to , “Eat a gourmet lunch surrounded by birds, trees and happy people having the time of their lives!”
In the opinion of Terminal City Club's Chef David Long "This is a really fantastic event because it brings everyone involved in the food chain together from the public to the farmers to the cooks and the chefs. It's not only educational fun, but honestly delicious."
Each team brings along basic items such as stock, seasonings and a secret ingredient. With the help of a guest selected by raffle, the entrants harvest fruit and veggies from John and Alyson’s lower fields and race up the hill to create four unique plates in the remaining hour. The winner is decided by judges, (guests selected by raffle), who taste and score the creations under the tutelage of Chef Beston.
Prior to the contest, there is a wonderful buffet of wild salmon, barbecued organic chicken, as fresh as you get local organic vegetables, salads, sushi and other surprise morsels (including lots of vegetarian options) prepared ahead of time in the kitchens of the contestants. And to top it all off, the the much-adored dark chocolate dipped raspberry popsicles.
Proceeds go to help Glen Valley Organic Farm Co-op and Fraser Common Farm Co-op build educational facilities for their sustainable living outreach programs.
So, lots of good reasons to put a farm in your life. Circle Sunday 7th August on your calendar and treat yourself to a day in gorgeous Glen Valley, just east of Fort Langley. Savour magnificent food. Meet and cheer on some of our best local chefs. Tour this beautiful 50- acre mixed farm. Groove to live Celtic music. And remember to stock up with fresh organic veggies at the Farm Gate stand on your way home. Get your tickets now, last year was a sell out and we had to turn folks away at the gate.
