Juggler and I triumphed over the kayak strips last night.

We needed to cut an 18' long board lengthwise into 1/4" strips. Think about that level of precision for a moment... you're running something eighteen feet long through a blade, and you need to keep it from wobbling along the whole length; you must be accurate enough that the thing stays 1/4" wide. You need to do this a whole bunch of times.

We finally found a setup with the tablesaw that worked okay.

It was fun.

I love cedar. This board was pink, white, and brown inside.

Now, I will try to be on time for work.

Congratulations

Congratulations on your triumph. Cedar is definitely a very nice wood. We've got a closet paneled in it. Granted, I don't want to imagine how much a whole closet worth of cedar wood would cost. The original owners built it from a tree that had fallen but still had good solid wood inside.

Also nudge, nudge. My mailbox is empty. :>

No, no, this is Western Red Cedar (thuja plicata to the google friendly) and not a cedrus or any of the other 'true' cedars. Looks slightly different, smells different, works differently. Basically, when the British ran around naming things, they only had like three native evergreen trees. So, when they ran into new trees in the vast wide world, they called anything vaguely evergreen and scented a cedar with no botanical justification.

Jeeze, you seem to expect me to have time or something. This weekend I should.

*laughs* I stand informed. As opposed to corrected. You'll have to send me a picture or something. Or, maybe, I'll be unlazy and unbusy enough to google it later. Yay for Google!

Hey, you're the one who said you'd do it after work. Don't blame me. *innocent look* And nah, I don't expect you to have time. I'm just more important than the rest of the universe, that's all. ;)

Google images is so quick and easy, though...

But if I can't blame you, who will I blame?

There's a quote from Haida artist Bill Reid, on cedar: "If mankind in his infancy had prayed for the perfect substance for all material and aesthetic needs, an indulgent God could have provided nothing better."

Totally accurate, if it weren't for the high toxicity of the dust. Theoretically that means one should usre hand-tools, but...
