So I go to try an instant messenger: Miranda. One of these no-scary-user-agreement multi-network things. I stopped using IMs before the year 2000 for multiple reasons.

After over an hour of messing around, I give up for the night, defeated.

Miranda scares the hell out of ME, and I've been using those no-scary-user-agreement multi-network things since they've had no-scary-user-agreement multi-network things.

Gaim (http://gaim.sourceforge.net/). Just not the beta version. That's also somewhat creepy.

Another I've heard good of is Trillian, though I use Gaim and I like it a lot.

I would second Trillian. One of the few messengers that didn't manage to annoy the hell out of me over the past few years. And very easy to use.
