The origin of agriculture is dated at approximately 8000 BCE. It started with the cultivation of plants from seed, and has evolved to our current reality: a complex system in which the majority of (Western) people are completely separated from the production of their food. This presentation will examine our current agricultural paradigm, w! ith an emphasis on seeds and seed saving. Sarah will discuss: the technical aspects of seed saving, basic seed politics and current movements in BC towards an Organic Seed Strategy.
Sarah Belanger is a 2004 graduate of the Linnaea Farm Ecological Gardening Programme, an intensive 8 month Permaculture design/organic farming program on Cortes Island, BC. She is a passionate young gardener, and an aspiring educator. Sarah spent the 2005 growing season (April - Sept) apprenticing with Dan Jason of Salt Spring Seeds and the Seed Sanctuary of Canada. She is currently a student at UBC, focusing on community education and sustainable agriculture.
Directions
The MacMillan Building is on the west side of Main Mall, just north of Agronomy Road, on the UBC main campus. The Conservation Hut is located between MacMillan and the adjacent parking lot.
