So, the bed that I lasagna-composted last spring (cheap and dirty-- newspaper, blood meal, and city compost) got disturbed today. I took the greenhouse down with Juggler's help. Just walking on the surface, we saw a whole bunch of huge (5" long, 1/3" wide) earthworms, and some smaller ones. The soil is like heaven. So wonderful. So good.

Very nice; the ground is still pretty solid here, however I'd better get my tail in gear and drop a couple of hundred pounds of lime out back before spring.

On a more positive angle, the peas are coming up in the little planters here. I keep watering them daily; when they are big enough to need trelli I'll put them outside.

Is the ground solid there all winter?

It hardens up like a brick when it gets cold, then the top layer turns to mud when it warms, then brick, repeat.

The combo of mud on brick pretty much disables the tractor.

Amazing. We really are lucky in our climate here.
