Volauakadanu
Volauakadanu always was more sensitive than usual, and so perhaps it's not surprising that, given a nonideal upbringing, became more messed up than usual.
To begin with, he's a bit of an outsider. Vollistans aren't all angels, even the modern ones, despite what public image would have you say, and he was the son to a single mother who was definitely less of an angel than most. The first thing that happened along these lines was: he was born. This would have been in 2982 as the hunmans figure these things, and it was the beginning of his problems. His mother a wandering priestess and storyteller, moving from Cave to Cave and settling disputes and offering up parabled as well as gossip, though the latter more seldom. She was also flawed in a rather serious way.
Some people are stronger than others; some smarter; some have a better sense of smell or hearing. Volauashadaie was more telepathic than other Vollistans, and for reasons that Volauakadanu never would understand, she was also worse at shielding herself. Whether that was cause or effect, she was also worse at some other highly Vollistan qualities, like socialising closely with a group and telling the truth. Her stories changed from day to day, a thing which her son, who travelled with her, saw more than thoise caves where she stopped briefly, looked closely for a day or two, did her business, and then moved on to what at first always seemed blessed peace.
On Vollista generally, the hypocrisy that allows human society to flow smoothly has been replaced by a wry understanding of flaws; it's been replaced by tolerance in those who have no choice but to see. This tolerance doesn't extend forever, and people are born from time to time who don't continue to go on as they were, but Dan's mother was of little negative impact on the society as a whole and so she was tolerated, and possibly even largely unnoticed. To be a modern Vollistan and a good liar is an odd thing, and requires extreme fluidity in one's beliefs, but there you have it.
Uncomfortable in larger caves and within densely populated areas due to her extreme telepathic nature, Volauashadaie was nonetheless a gifted mediator, perhaps aided by this same sensitivity that in the end would drive her out of any place. She was also more than a little lonely, and perhaps this is how Volauakadanie was conceived, as a companion on the road. And so he was.
So, in short, we have a boy who was hauled around much of Vollista during his childhood, with his mother as the only object for his attachment. He had nightmares when she sent him a little distance away because his voice in her head was too loud for her to sleep; he was content when he was with her, sometimes tweaked into happiness by her psionic talents to prevent him from crying. He emerged from beneath her overpowering personality as a boy unconventional in a number of aspects.
First, he was not comfortable or stable long-term in society. He ran away from his mother when he was twenty, that would be the Vollistan equivalent of about twelve, rebellioous and angry and full of other, conflicted and unresolved emotions. The only real times he'd had top use his self-control were to go and stay away, and it showed. He hit Radiance like a thunderbolt, relatively untaught in mind-shielding, a cauldron of negative emotions and irritability and reactionism he had no way of controlling. Radiance hit him like a thunderbolt too, with news of aliens that he'd only abstractly believed in landing, with the artifacts of a large social group to which he'd never been exposed. He was more than usually innocent, always having travelled with someone who was powerful in his own right among Vollistans who were mostly kind and not at all dangerous. He was taken up like a plaything by many Vollistans returning to Vollista after Sanctuary, who sought a minor arena to act out in.
Second, he had inherited, or perhaps learned by observation, his mother's extra sensitivity and her flair for diplomacy and mediation. In Radiance, he careened from fire to fire, starting them and then putting them out. The people who he had deeply offended, or who he had hurt, were always left with just a little niggling wonder in their heads: how did I end up forgiving him? How did this end up okay? He was more than usually charming, certainly, but he also had a way of saying what people wanted to hear, orf finding their weak spots and pressing there.
Third, he was quickly learning to lie. When he was with his mother there was no real reason to, but given her behaviour he had no particular qualms, and it did help him out of messy situations more than once. Some of the ex-interrogators who took him under their wings demanded it regularly, their behaviour so erratic that the truth would occasionally send them into fits of rage. As he picked up Vollistan social mores, he lied to himself as well, excusing his faults under the banner of stirring up trouble so it could be mediated away before it erupted into a problem. He thought he was proactive.
In short, life was chaotic and messy, and it sucked. Volauakadanu enjoyed keeping himself alive and sane (by terran standards; by Vollistan standards little of this wqas sane) as a sort of a challenge, it was even fun in a way, but he found himself sinking more and more often into a sort of exasperation and despair. Luminary wasn't any better than Radiance, his mother was out there in the small Caves and he was still unconsciously in flight from her, so there was only one way to go: up.
As he left Vollista on a spaceship in the spring of 3006, equipped with the self-image of a priest off to do his duty in a messed-up universe, some clothing, and a body any Terran would write off as 'maybe fifteen years old', he was lying to himself in two ways: he was seeking, not the external peace he thought, but than internal chaos to match that of his own mind; and he felt, not wonder about the ship below his feet, but thqat the act of taking it was an affront to the gods he still tried to serve.
