Today the weather can only be described as 'balmy'. I am happy, probably because of excercise, sunlight, and, er, socialising-- this despite the fact that our fridge is wrecked.

Sabrina and Colin, I have a small tree for you. Sabrina, it's a standard (horticulture speak for 'tree') hibiscus, if you want to start researching.

Friday between 5:30 and 9pm, or I could drop it by Saturday

Warning, it's not in a pot, though I have lots of potting soil.

Friday sounds good. When you say it's not potted, do you mean it's a cutting? Or is it rooted?

Rooted, yes. It came out of something like a two-gallon pot, lived in an office building for maybe a month, and got moved out because it kept wilting (it was in too small a pot and too hot a location). I got to take it home. It has some spider mites, which are easily clear-upable (I've sprayed once and will spray again before you get here, then send you home with soap), but is a really healthy tree. It likely won't flower till next summer though. It's maybe five feet tall all told?

Oh, I got some soap myself, actually.

5 ft tall? Holy cow.

I can spray the bugs with alcohol and water, too, to kill the bugs, right?

Yeah, I use 2 tsp soap, 2 tsp rubbing alcohol, and two cups water in a sprayer at work.

I've seen big hibicuses planted as bushes in yards in the GVRD: there's a big'un just north of Womyn's Ware on the drive.

That's a hardy hibiscus, a rose of sharon. This is a true or tropical hibiscus. There's also a perennial hibiscus, which has no winter wood but has dinner-plate flowers.

If you don't have room it can totally live in my back room forever. I just think Zephyr would enjoy it more somewhere central than I would enjoy it in the back room.

How many gallons of soil do you think it needs?

Do you ever take any plants from work, or do you give 'em all to me?

I haven't been taking them lately, my house isn't finished being organised. I would put it in a 12" or 14" pot, and you can have as much of my soil as you need for it (maybe that's the equivalent of a five gallon pot or a little less).

That's very generous of you. I appreciate all your generosity in helping me turn my place into a plant haven. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't taking plants that you could need!

It's neat because I have this sort of constant supply of potential plants, so when they come up I can take them... or wait till it's more convenient for me. bEcause I'm assured that more will come along, I don't mind waiting. :)

And it makes me happy to know other people who are into plants, because then I don't feel like such a weird plant lady. Or at least, I feel like I'm in good company. ;)
