Somewhere between eighteen and twenty-five, I went from believing that well-worded sneering sarcasm was a sign of cleverness to believing that it's cruel.

(Thank you for the advocacy.) I was just about to say that. Alas, I think malice and intelligence are entirely orthogonal. In fact, stupid people doing nasty things can be difficult to classify as cruel; some just don't know any better. Intelligent people doing nasty things have less of a defence (if defence it can be called).
