If you try to be graceful, kind, good-- a good person to good people --you must also learn to apologise sometimes. If you live your life in an 'I do what I want, I am what I am, deal with it' sort of way you don't can be unapologetic about hurting people, but not otherwise. And since everyone messes up sometimes, you will need to apologise sometimes. Sometimes necessity even demands that there's no overall-good solution.

And that's okay. Don't ignore it, don't hide from it, don't worry that since things are a little fucked up they'll always be irreparably fucked up and stop trying. Apologise and go on.

Apologizing is hard. I think it's because a lot of people think freedom = lack of responsibility. Which is only true if you're pulling a Joplin ("Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose.")

For those of us who like to have more choices w/o screwing people over, it usually means MORE responsibility. Which means accountability. Consequences. Stuff that is not fun all the time.

So yeah, we pay for more choices with more responsibility - at least if we don't wanna live for the rest of our days leaving a scorched trail of broken hearts, alienation, bad feelings and regrets.

No. It is much better to just pretend everything is fine. In fact, repeating the phrase "everything is fine" over and over can work wonders.

I'll keep that in mind. I take it this worked for you in your numerous very successful interpersonal relationships?

Well, it worked for me, yeah. Not so sure about them, but I think everything's fine.
