Self-Care and The Love of Adversity
Mar. 14th, 2008 05:11 pmThere's a lot to be said for a nice hot bath with a mason jar full of chocolate milkshake and a Kim Stanley Robinson book you haven't read. It wasn't quite enough to transform me back into a human after getting home covered in several tons of mud only to discover that my tampon had likely been leaking for a couple of hours but I hadn't noticed it cause I was sweating so hard inside my rain gear that everything was wet anyhow (luckily nothing soaks through rain gear to embarass me on the way home), but I'm well on the way. I got a dress yesterday that is super-beautiful, fits me like a glove, and matches the greener bits of my hair. That helps. More food will help too.
I remember thinking today, 'man, if I didn't love this job so much I'd really hate it' -- this at various points: as I was chopping through clay hardpan to dig a planting hole a foot and a half deep (satisfying to break *through* it and know the plant wasn't gonna be rotting in a puddle); as I was undercutting a several-hundred-pound rhododendron rootball that went painfully slowly cause not only was it in a corner, but the spot I was undercutting was so far under the plant at that point that I was working by feel; as me and three other guys were trying to move said rhodo (couldn't even get it an inch, so we'll try Monday with five or six people).
I've been singing all day, sometimes out loud.
Thank the gods for working with people who have a sense of humour. Also for it not raining all day. Also for rain gear. Also for ginger ale. Also for life, oh yes, thank you so much for that. Also for the way my breasts look in this new dress. Also for my ratties who were happy to see me this afternoon. Also for an early ending to the day at work. Also for people to wake up next to sometimes, and to my unicorns to wake up snuggled with otherwise. Also for being my own person because look: here I am, mine.
Also, soon, for food, and for the dreadnoughts show on Saturday night. Who's going? I so am.
