Yesterday...

...was the day of getting stuff that I thought was impossible done, and of shopping with my mom. The place in Nanimo will apparently 'ship' rats out here, once they're out of quarantine (there was a disease at a show recently) so I think that's what I'll do. Thanks for all the stories about rats, it's nice to know other people have had them. Anyone have a left-over cage? Needs to be pretty big, big enough to house two.

Now I'm exhausted. I need to make a boundary around staying up late on days before I work, and I need to keep to it. It doesn't seem to matter how soon I'm working the next day, since I wake up at 8am at the latest, period, no matter when the work is. This will no doubt complicate scheduling, but oh, well. What needs to be done, needs to be done.

LDino has an old rabbit cage that will be MEGA big for 2 rats. Should I enquire?

Two important things: plastic tray on the bottom, as opposed to metal mesh, and the mesh has to be pretty close together (which it doesn't need to be for rabbits).

I kept my rats in a big aquarium floored with bark chips, and had a mesh 'ceiling' which clamped down to the top plasic of the aquarium. Rats will gnaw at anything, and eventually, with amazing gymnastics, managed to eat away some of the plastic which held the top down and I had to weigh it down :)Be aware that they will likely chew on the plastic of any cage you put them in.

The aquarium was neat, could be easily rinsed out, and they had lots of homemade jungle-gym equipment to climb on (I've started saving up my heavy duty cardboard tubes for your new pals).

You might be able to find a cage or aquarium at a Thrift store.
