In Canada you are now allowed to get raw milk from cow co-ops or CSAs, though any other way of selling or distributing it is still illegal. Between that, chickens in the city, and bees in the city, I'm starting to get pretty happy with the way things are going.

It's a federal law which bans the milk. If someone determines that that particular federal law doesn't apply in a somewhat related case (such as selling & distribution vs co-operatives) then other areas will tend to rule the same way if it comes up-- and so that federal law tends not to be extended into that domain anymore.

Somewhat similar, though not exactly the same, is the way banning female toplessness but not male toplessness in a given area was found to be a violation of rights in Ontario, but we in BC figure it's okay here. If we were to get in trouble, it could go to court and our specific stuff against it could be overturned, but everyone mostly knows how it will turn out.
