greenstormMy friends list is growing fast enough that I'm beginning to need to go the 'last twenty' to keep an eye on comments. The latest victim? Lazarus7, whi I met when I as feeling antisocial and pretty much ignored. He, uh, linked to something funny on the internet (they still make funny things out there, I guess) and then said my name. In retaliation for his talking to me when I wasn't looking I hereby bestow a tacky colour scheme upon him. Really tacky. Don't look if you can't suck it back.
I need a good book. I wonder how much of this is simply me suffering from too much Spider-Robinson-on-his-platform short stories?

Perhaps we can sit and have coffee sometime and chat philosophically about those things that inspire us ... or we can just run about being silly, wearing silly hats and making fun of tourists. Its all good.
On another note, not grooving on Spider Robinson? Perhaps you have been reading to much of his stuff at once. His style always reminded me of Heinlein, which is why I started reading his stuff in the first place, but he does tend to get somewhat repetitive.
Switch it up a bit and read something else. You will appreciate his books that much more when you come back.

Date: 2003-06-20 09:30 am (UTC)As for Spider Robinson: yes, that is the problem. The other problem is that I have no other books. I have a big pile of his stuff and no other books. What does this mean? I read his books. They're there. They're readable. There are only so many cereal boxes in the house to read the backs of in between, and the SO is reading the supposedly interesting book I was going to read.
What does this mean? It means that i could 1) return all the books and have nothing to read or 2) read, complain, but at least have read something. And I do like his nonfiction bits, they're nkind of interesting.
I tried 3) getting more books to read in between, but there are a lot of spider Robinson books here and the in-betweens have now been all read up.
We won't talk about Heinlein here. ;)

Date: 2003-06-20 09:42 am (UTC)There is nothing wrong with his books, just to be clear. I have most of his books and have talked to the man on many occasions and consider him talented, interesting, and a good read! However, to much of a good thing or however that story goes.
If you were closer, I would invite you to come by my house and peruse my library ... the 5 hour commute is likely to be a bitch though. No libraries nearby?
Why no talk of Heinlein? Am I missing something subtle? *smile*

Fantasy can be a good thing when it does not replace reality but rather accentuates reality by either allowing for escapism from problems, or exploration of the unknown. Fantasy can often allow for lines of thought that do not occur normally. This thinking can be used to create positive change in non-fantasy situations.
