Monster Post
Aug. 21st, 2005 07:49 pmFirst, an awesome poem:
Manifesto: The Mad Farmer Liberation Front
( Read more... )
When they want you to buy something
they will call you. When they want you
to die for profit they will let you know.
So, friends, every day do something
that won't compute. Love the Lord.
Love the world. Work for nothing.
Take all that you have and be poor.
Love someone who does not deserve it.

Isn't that awesome?
So, today was pet care day. This morning, I took care of Juggler and helped him clean his ca- er, yard and basement a bit. We hung out in a hardware store forever and a day (maybe a couple of hours) figuring out how to set up his coral-grow operation. We ended up buying nothing there for him but some stuff for a window plant-shelf for me, and a super-serious pump at JL Aquatics.
Headed to Petcetera, where I picked up a koi friend for the goldfish (Tillie, what is the goldfish's name?). This is another one of those commitment things: both koi and goldfish live longer than rats, and they'll grow out of the tank I have. I am pissed off by Petcetera. They had a special: buy one koi, get two free. Lemme think about this: one fish that grows three feet long, or three? If they want to discount stuff, they should discount stuff, not encourage people to buy too many things (fish, hamsters, whatever) and then kill them all through overcrowding. Or, maybe the expect two-thirds of what they sell to die, and this is a warranty type dealie? Feh. Anyhow, I got one koi, not three for the same price. She's pretty, a white with a little bit of black and gold speckling along her back. She blends with the gravel well.
So, I got the fish home, and also got the bucket I bought home, and I did a water change. Wow! The aquarium I got from Tillie had a two-inch bed of gravel, and as per stuff I'd read on the internet, I started to take it out. Gravel is evil. It holds a ton of disgusting stuff in it, and goldfish eat all real plants anyhow, so it's not useful as a rooting medium. The gravel's about half gone now, and stirring it up to take it out, despite the fact that I'd washed it when I started up the tank and have only had one goldfish in there, stirred up a ton of shit-- literally. Eeeew. I'll be much happier when I have a thin layer (something for them to dig in) that I can siphon clean easily.
I didn't want to do too much drastic stuff to the tank, though, because I was introducing Miss Koi. So, half water change, got the filter scrubbed out with a toothbrush and going, and ganked half the gravel. By then, the water temps had equalised, and after the whole mixing-water thing I let Miss Koi go (woo, I think she's named).
It's really neat to look at the two side by side. Miss Koi has little whiskers, her mouth is downward-facing, and she liked to lurk. Golfish likes to lurk too (I need to get more terrain for them, they seem to love 'stuff') but tends to go a little higher from time to time, though I'm certain their behaviour patterns haven't yet stabilised. Both pick through the gravel and spit it out again.
With two aquarium filters going in here, I topped up the tanks all the way (I like the trickle sound of water that filters make when the tanks aren't all-the-way full, but it's too loud with two of them) and it's remarkably quiet now.
Then I cuddled the rats a very little. They'll get more, I promise.
I also got rid of an extra computer chair (who am I kidding. I got rid of the computer chair, I only ever computer from the bed, I don't like chairs & never use them when I can avoid it). This freed up some fish-water space, and next is to throw out the dresser in my closet which I never use and replace it with two big trunks for holding random clothing, or else a bookshelf for holding random stuff. I need to go through my clothing and throw-out too.
Yay me.

Atmosphere
Aug. 21st, 2005 10:47 pmOh yeah. On the weekend, Juggler and I went to a place on Main and King Edward called Helen's Diner. This place is not the cheapest diner in the city, but I think it's the best. Why?
- I've been there twice now, and it's obvious that of the two waitresses I had, one was the mother and one the middle-aged daughter. They were diner-y, that is, they treated you like people, not like factory sausages like fast food people do, and were kinda chatty but not obtrusive and, as I said, seemed related.
- Jukeboxes on each table with awesome old music. I played 'Oh What A Night' by The Four Seasons, Juggler played 'Only the Lonely' by Orbison.
- Yummiest pancakes ever.
- Low bar from which you can see the kitchen.
- Lots of windows and plants all over.
- Banana splits.
